So who is Davis Thompson, the latest PGA Tour winner?
Living on St. Simons Island, Ga., it might be easy to confuse his first name with Davis Love III, the long-time resident there and a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. He also has the same last name as another Tour winner who lives on the Golden Isles, Michael Thompson.
But David Thompson has made a name for himself with a final-round 64 on Sunday to win the John Deere Classic at the TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. He had eight birdies, starting with a putt of 44 feet on the first hole.

The main perk Thompson gets, aside from a check for $1,440,000, is a spot in the British Open at Troon in two weeks. It will be his fifth start in a major championship. Thompson also picked up 500 FedEx Cup points and moved from 51st on the standings to 22nd.

Thompson becomes the latest in a long list of PGA Tour winners who played for Chris Haack at the University of Georgia. The roll call: Bubba Watson, Hudson Swafford, Kevin Kisner, Chris Kirk, Harris English, Russell Henley, Brian Harman, Keith Mitchell, Sepp Straka and Brendon Todd. All except Watson, Kisner, Kirk, Henley and Todd live on the Golden Isles.
And the Dawgs must like it in the Midwest. Straka won the John Deere Classic last year and Harman in 2017.
Davis Thompson has been trending up
The victory has been in the works. In Thompson’s last seven starts he’s won, tied for second twice (including last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic), tied for ninth in the U.S. Open and made six cuts. But he first got notice last year when he went head-to-head with Jon Rahm in The American Express, losing by one shot.

Thompson has some strong golf genes working for him. His father Todd played for the Bulldogs from 1985-1988 and was the team captain in 1987 and 1988.
Davis Thompson can hoop a little bit
Thompson is a pretty good athlete. He was on the Lee-Scott Academy basketball team in Auburn, Ala., when it won the 2016 state championship. He won two individual state titles in golf and led Lee-Scott to six state team titles.
While at Georgia, Thompson was the SEC Player of the Year in 2021 and was the medalist in two NCAA regionals, in 2019 and 2022.
