By admin Jul20,2024

SOUTH BEND – Seeking her 25th title, Lori Horan headlines a field of 16 golfers Monday when the 54-hole South Bend Women’s Metro Open championship begins at Erskine Park.

Horan, who won her first Women’s Metro title as a 16-year-old South Bend Clay student in 1979, won last year’s tournament with a 12-over-par 224 total, eight strokes better than Selah Unwin and nine ahead of Kathleen Cochrane.

Last year, Unwin opened with a round of 75, three strokes ahead of Horan. But Horan followed with a one-under 71 at Elbel Park to reverse the lead against Unwin and closed with a 75 for the championship, her first since 2020.

Horan and Unwin will be joined by Dominka Burdova in Monday’s first threesome off Erskine Park’s first hole. Cochrane is in the next threesome at 8:10 with Jaiden Winters and Delaney Wade, a four-time sectional champion at Penn High School who will be attending Wofford College in the fall. Wade earned all-state honors last September in the Indiana high school girls championship.

This year’s tournament moves to Elbel Park for Tuesday’s second round and concludes Thursday at Erskine Park.
