Jul. 6—WATERTOWN — The 100th edition of the Watertown City Golf Championship is under way with a new NCAA Basketball Tournament-style format to determine the winner.

Qualifying took place Saturday at the Thompson Park Golf Course to determine the bracket, which was instituted this year in a bid to generate a little more excitement among participating golfers. In the past, qualifying determined the top 32 golfers for the championship flight and the remaining participants would play in lower flights.

John Bufalini is the defending champion and in search of his 10th city championship. As the top seed, he will face No. 64 seed David Gerken in the first round. Thirty-two first-round matches are slated for Sunday, with those advancing continuing to play matches through next week.

The semifinals are slated for Saturday, July 13th with the 36-hole championship round set for July 14.

Phil Rogers is seeded second in the tournament with Joe Tufo No. 3, Shawn Thomas No. 4 and 14-time city champion Bob Hughes seeded fifth.

Rounding out the top 10 is Michael Burgess (6th), Nate Heller (7th), Jude Jennings (8th), Dylan Kernahan (9th) and Brendan Laverty (10th).
