500th Hickory Stick Golf Game

By admin Jul31,2024

In just a few short years, my friend Lorne Emery has played his 500th game using his hickory shafted golf clubs. An ardent player of old clubs, Lorne invited me to join him on his historic journey. As I arrived early at the Cambridge Golf Club to discuss Lorne’s hickory stick passion, I quickly realized that this phase of his golf journey has only just begun. Listening to him talk about the history of golf and how it applies to present day equipment demonstrates that today’s innovations in clubs are rooted in hickory sticks. Lorne and I had a fantastic day that encompassed more than just talking about hickory sticks.

On May 29, 2018, Lorne played his first game with hickory sticks. Being introduced to this aspect of golf by Gerald Achtymichuk just six short years ago, Lorne was immediately hooked and his new adventure was started. With 47 games under his belt already this year, Lorne anticipated playing 100+ games with his vintage clubs by the end of the 2024 season. An important note, the total of 100 games does not include playing golf with modern and vintage steel clubs. Lorne loves all parts of golf and it definitely shows from the moment you start chatting with him about his passion.

Lorne invited me down to Cambridge Golf Club , to play around of hickory sticks. Since I was going to be in the area, I figured this would be a great time to play a round of golf with my friend. Once Lorne let me know that it was going to be his 500th game, I could not miss this amazing milestone.

Lorne and I were paired with Mike (a veteran of hickory sticks) and Doug (playing his second round). It was a great group and from the outset the laughs, jokes and great shots were in abundance.

Lorne describes his game as ‘boring old man golf’ because he hits the ball in play 95% of the time. It might not be as long as in previous years, but when you have a reasonable shot most of the time, golf is a pretty simple game.

As we looped the golf course, Lorne entertained us with story after story about golf. His exploits are amazing and as he chatted it became very clear that he understands how to play hickory golf very well. He coaches without direct comments. He taught me to swing smooth at about 70% of my modern speed. He explained that the loft of the clubs was more important than the number on the club face and that the bump and run is the shot of choice around the green. Additionally, trying use the putter as quickly as possible was key to using hickory sticks. Overall, all the great tips Lorne offered while playing hickory sticks will apply to my normal game……go figure!

During our round, Mike was the player of the day. He was very good around the green and demonstrated that hitting shots was not all about ‘gripping and ripping’ everything. It was about playing consistent golf and executing each shot as well as possible. He struggled with is putting a bit (happens to us all) or else he would have shot in the mid 70s. Regardless, he still had a 31 in the Stableford system.

Doug was new to hickory clubs. He has a very nice swing and will learn to hit the ball well with the wooden shafted clubs once he figures our the rhythm that works for his swing. He made some great shots that will keep him coming back for more hickory rounds.

Playing golf with Lorne is always a great time. He keeps the mood light and always has a smile on his face. Being part of his 500th round was a thrill for sure. As with our first round about 5 years ago, Lorne was a consummate gentleman who loves sharing his passion for hickory golf. Being invited to play in his milestone game was an honour and I look forward to playing more hickory rounds with him in the future.
