Harrison grad Nic Hofman finds success at Lafayette Men’s City with mom caddying

By admin Aug1,2024

WEST LAFAYETTE — Harrison graduate and Western Kentucky golfer Nic Hofman walked the 13th hole at Allen-Ackerman seemingly alone and looking ahead at his next shot.

It was one of those days where the game was clicking. Drives were finding the fairway, his second and third shots were landing where they needed and if there were any patches of rough he swung through, they were mildly cumbersome at best.

And while he walked the course, keeping a steady but distanced pace was his mom Jackie who was his caddie during match play of the Lafayette Men’s City Golf Tournament.

It was Jackie’s first time caddying for her son who won the event as a high schooler in 2019.

“It was fun and better than staying at home,” Jackie Hofman said last Sunday. “I usually walk but I was pushing the cart. Luckily he didn’t deal with as many holes this time.”

The Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex is almost like a second home to Nic who watched his father win the event multiple times.

Any pressure felt by Nic was eased by his mom as she simply handed the club number to her son.

“I at least know what the putter is,” Jackie said.

And the experience of having his mom made the performance all for the better. Hoffman cruised to a 5 & 4 victory against Kelly Greene in the round of 16. Greene, a known local player, knocked off two former champions in 2021 including the previous year’s winner Austin Conroy.

That was followed with a 3 & 2 win against Brooks Leftwich.

Nic Hofman credited his mom for keeping him relaxed on the course.

“She made sure I was having fun,” Nic Hofman said. “For the most part, I just do my own thing but it is nice to have someone with you to chat and talk about stuff about golf. You just keep your mind occupied.”

Hofman is one of four golfers remaining in the championship flight bracket of the tournament with his father Brent. He tees off at 8:50 a.m. Saturday against former Indiana Wesleyan player Dalton Miller.

And if both Hofmans win, a duel for the Lafayette Men’s City Golf Championship will be contested between father and son on Sunday.

At that point, Jackie won’t be sure who to root for. Nic got the better of his elder, knocking him out of match play in 2018.

“It was fun and I hope we get to do it again,” Nic Hofman said. “It’s always fun to have that opportunity. It’s definitely a lot harder for my mom not knowing who to root for. We always play together when I’m home. It’s just another day at the office for me and him.”

The same can’t be said for Jackie.

“That was not fun,” Jackie Hofman said. “It started with a little heckling between the two. Once his dad went 1 up between the two it got really quiet. And then you could feel that Brett wanted to do well but he wanted to do well. It was a win-win either way, but going through it, it wasn’t fun.”

With golf being the competitive catalyst of the two men, she also remembers watching Brent shake Nic’s hand after the win.

The Lafayette Men’s City Golf Tournament is a family tradition for the Hofman family, win or lose.

“Since Nic was little he was with his dad out on the driving range and out on the course,” Jackie Hofman said. “It was finally about the third grade if he wanted to try baseball. He could hit the ball but couldn’t catch it. He had a lot of fat lips so he just stuck with golf.”
