Unintentionally Hitting The Wrong Club

By admin Aug28,2024

Every once in awhile I make an unforgiveable mistake while playing golf. I unintentionally hit the wrong club. Yup, through pure inattention I hit the ball either too long or short because the club I selected was all wrong. Now, I bet you are wondering how this huge mistake can happen; well it is easier than you think. And I bet all of you have committed this mistake at least once. I know how to fix this issue, but I am not sure I can employ it all the time.

First, let me tell you an incident where selecting the wrong club almost cost me a golf tournament. I was playing is a south side challenge at Borden, Ontario. It is not a very big event and the only person I felt that could beat me was hitting the ball well. I was on the 6th hole and had about 165 yards to the pin. This was a perfect six iron and so I confidently grab my club and hit the ball 30 yards short of the green. Gasping in shock I looked the nine iron in my hand! I shook my head in disbelieve and wondered how I could make such a terrible mistake. Fortunately, I was able to get up and down for par and went on to win the event.

Another time the exact opposite happened. I selected a club (5 iron) instead of a six and rocketed the ball over the green into the woods. This mistake did not cost me a tournament or anything, but I gained three strokes on my scorecard for now real reason. All for grabbing the club next to my intended club and poof my round is scuttled. If you are wondering why three strokes, two for a lost ball and one to regain my composure on my next shot which came up short.

Okay, I have mentioned a few incidents where I failed to select the proper club and it was all due to my lack of focus. Yup, a split second of inattention cost me or could have cost me something. Unfortunately, this will happen again in the future even though I know it can be an issue. However, during tournaments, I am dialed in and will not make that mistake again….I hope.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
