Day 2 of AJGA Junior Championship results in some shuffling

Aug. 15—Mother Nature ruled the morning as golfers had to endure a four-hour weather delay before the start of the second round of the Roper Honda AJGA Junior Championship on Thursday at Twin Hills.

When play finally got underway, leader Jack Ryan Donovan, of Ave Maria, Florida, opened the door to the rest of the field after bogeying his first two holes.

Donovan, who shot a 5-under 67 for Wednesday’s opening round, struggled on the front nine with bogeys on No. 1 and No. 2, and a double bogey on No. 8. Donovan was able to find his form and birdied the 13th hole, but his early struggles dropped him to a tie with three other golfers for ninth place with a two-day total of 142.

Conner Bryce, of Dallas, and Preston Albee, of Choctaw, Oklahoma, are tied for the lead at 138. Both golfers have shot identical rounds of 69 for the first two days.

Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Brenton Manley (72, 67-139) was in third.

Ozark Amateur champion Jack Spencer, of Carl Junction, entered the day tied for sixth at 2-under, He shot even on the front nine Thursday, but logged a double bogey on No. 10 to fall to a tie for 15th place midway through Round 2. Spencer regrouped and birdied No. 17 to finish the day at 1-over. Spencer (70, 73-143) enters the final round tied for 12th place with four other golfers. He is five strokes behind the leaders.

On the girls side, Nevada’s Emree Cameron, who entered Thursday’s round tied for fourth place with a 3-over 75, bogeyed twice and birdied once on the front nine. She logged bogeys on No. 7 and No. 8 before recording a birdie on her final hole to finish 2-over on the day.

Cameron (75, 74-149) will enter the final round tied for third place with five other golfers and seven strokes behind leader Kristina Xu (72, 70-142) of Claremont, California.

Isabella Piazza, of Phoenix, is in second after shooting a first-round 1-over 73 and a 2-over 74 on Thursday.

The American Junior Golf Association Junior Championship wraps up Friday.
