I used the ones that came with the clubs I hit and never changed them. Of course, that was many years ago and I have since gained some knowledge and understanding about how the size of a golf grip can affect my game. The interesting thing about it the changes I made, the experimental grips were all about feel because my production with my clubs did not change all that much…..except with my putter. We can discuss that at the end of this article.
When I first started golfing, I found that all my clubs used a standard sized golf grip. This was the norm for equipment back then. Additionally, I could not afford to change my grips, so I learned to play golf with a standard sized golf grip. Because I did not know better, I thought that all was right in my golfing world. One thing I found with my grips is that my hands would hurt after playing. I was not gripping the club too tight, but my fingers would dig in into my hands where I interlocked. It was very uncomfortable, but again, I did not know any better.
Fast forward a few years and things changed. I had the opportunity to try a set of clubs with a midsized grip. The results was astonishing as my hands did not hurt and I felt I had better control of my clubhead during contact. So, as all amateurs should do, I talked to my local pro and he explained the differences about grip size and why we a change might help my game. I took his advice and I have never looked back.
As time progressed, I found that golf grip size was not a standard practice among golfers. After all my research and reading, I conclude that grip size is all about feel. What makes each player confident that they have the proper grip on their club comes down to how it feels in their hands. Yes, there can be some modifications made to optimize our contact with our grips, but for the average player use what feels most comfortable.
The only club that does not have a midsized grip is my putter. It is a fat grip because I really like the feel of it in my hands. I transitioned to a fat grip back in 2017 because I found that the fatter grip worked very well for my hand position and facilitated less wrist movement. I felt I was always a strong putter, but he fat grip enhanced that feeling and now I would never transition back to a different sized putter grip.
The golf grip comes in several sizes. Finding the one that works for your game is very important because it will increase your confidence during contact. There is no 100% clear cut answer. You need to find the one that works best for you and use it!
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
