Focusing On The 2024 Ontario Open Hickory Golf Championship

By admin Sep16,2024

“On Monday, September 23 and Tuesday, September 24, 2024, GHSC will host the second annual Ontario Open Hickory Golf Championship. This new two-day Championship seeks to identify the overall “Ontario Hickory Golf Champion for 2024.” In addition, this GHSC bedrock event provides a basis of friendly competition for all GHSC members and guests who wish to participate in 2024 and in future years.” (GHSC)

I have a week to prepare for this fun event and I think I have a game plan that will work. I am not expecting anything fantastic with respect to scoring, but I do hope that I can make a great showing at the hickory championship. Knowing this, I figured out what I must do this week and we shall see if my plan works.

My plan is pretty straight forward in the early stages. I need to practice chipping and putting around the greens. Because my modern clubs are completely different than from my hickories, I need to spend time learning and understanding how they react when chipping and putting. The concepts are the same for which shot to hit when, I just need to figure out which club responds best. I do know that the bump and run will be my friend next week for sure. Regardless, practicing my short game is important.

As you can already tell, by approach to playing hickory shafted golf clubs is the same as modern clubs. The only thing that is different is the technology. But, alas, it is fun trying to figure out what to hit in what scenario. Oh how I love playing golf!

My Hickory Putter

Another aspect of my game that needs attention is my putting. The mallet type putter I use rolls the ball very well. I can make solid contact with the ball, but it is warped a bit. Because of the shape of the shaft, I need to work on my alignment a bit to ensure I am hitting my target line. This putter is very good and expect it will save me a few strokes over the course of the two day event.

Next, I need to hit the course and figure out exactly how far I hit certain clubs. As of right now I have a general idea, but it is not precise enough for my game. I also have a couple extra clubs I have not hit that I just received, so putting them into the rotation will be a must. I have a good idea for my woods, but my irons need a great deal of work.

Lastly, I have decided to walk and carry my clubs. I think that it will be fun to experience the game as it was meant. I will not be foolish and leave my push cart at home, but carrying my clubs should be an experience.

I am looking forward to playing in the Ontario Hickory Championship. More importantly, I will have a chance to reconnect with old friends and share some great golf with like-minded golfers. Stay tuned for an update as the week unfolds.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
