An Important Approach Shot Tip For All Golfers

By admin Oct31,2024

Approach shots are the bane of most golfers golf scores. Some times we do not pick the proper club to fly the ball to the green and others we just aim poorly. The biggest challenge, in my opinion, is the strategy of always pin hunting regardless of the length of the approach shot. Most of us are not very accurate from a distance, yet we still think it is a good idea to hunt for a tight sided pin in the hopes of making a miracle shot. Unfortunately, hoping in golf tends to lead to disaster. The solution to this dilemma is to aim for the center of the green……if our ego allows this decision.

Over the years, I have found that starting at a distance of 150 yards, the center of the green becomes more appealing on approach shots. I would rather hit the middle of the green and have two putts for par than miss the green setting up a tougher series of shots for par. This leads to the question of at what distance should the center of the green be our target vice aiming at the pin.

I found a video that quickly explains, via handicap, the max distances a player should start aiming for the middle of the green. It does have a bit of advertising at the end of the video, but the information is still very valuable.

Every golfer I know is looking for ways to save strokes. Setting up a strong strategy for approach shots is a great way to improve our GIR stat, which in turn will lower our golf scores. This course management step was key in my development as a player and I am glad I followed that path to lower golf scores.

You are probably wondering why we don’t just aim for the center of the green all the time. Well, that is a solid approach to golf in the beginning. However, as we improve our game, refining our aimpoint will help improve our overall chances to make birdies and tap in pars. It is a process that each player needs to work through in order to build the confidence of hitting our target from greater distances. The choice is yours!

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
