Hitting A Difficult Sand Shot

By admin Nov6,2024

There are many different difficult shots you can face during a round of golf. One of the most challenging is the fried egg lie in a bunker. You know the one where the ball is three quarters buried and it looks impossible to get your ball out cleanly. It is a dreaded shot for most players because the chances of success is greatly dwindled. Well, fortunately, there is a simple technique that makes this shot as easy as chipping out of the fairway. Seem too good to be true, read on a check it out.

Hitting a fried egg bunker shot was something I dreaded for years. That is until I found a technique that works for my game. This technique is simple, but there is one aspect of this shot that most amateurs fail to execute effectively, thus resulting in a poor result. This process is not nearly as difficult as you think:

As you went through the five steps, the instructor made it seem so easy. I think it is especially if you follow the fifth step with gusto. Swing through the ball…..actually, accelerate through the ball is key to this difficult golf shot. Every time I talk to anyone about hitting the ball out of the bunker, I tell them to take some sand and to accelerate the clubhead through contact. This little aspect of this golf shot is the most important.

Even if you are using hickory sticks as my friend Lorne is in the picture on the left, accelerating through the ball and taking some sand is very important. It allows enough of an energy transfer on to the ball for it to pop out of its hole and release towards the green.

To be fair, I play for plenty of rollout with this golf shot. I can control the distance (somewhat) but my main goal is for the ball to be on the green with a chance at an up and down. I realize that this is not a very precise answer, but in my case I am happy with the ball anywhere on the green when hitting out of a plugged lie.

On a side note, hitting the ball out of a fried egg lie will result in a messed up bunker. Before your rake, I recommend you sweep the contact area with your foot to fill in the hole, then rake the green. If you do not know how to rake the sand trap, then I suggest you follow up today’s article with a quick read and short video from my article on how to properly rake a sand trap.

Hitting the ball out of the sand trap is a difficult shot. Hitting out of a fried egg or plugged lie in a sand trap is even more difficult. If you follow the five steps mentioned in the video with an emphasis on accelerating through contact, I think this shot will become much easier for your game. It does take some practice, however once you get a feel for this difficult shot, it will become far less daunting.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
