Golf Short Game Shots You Need To Master

During every round of golf, there are multiple opportunities to hit different approach shots from around the green. Our short game is always tested in various fashions. Every golfer knows this fact and many try to mitigate the challenges by mastering three shots every golfer should have in their bag: the chip, pitch and flop shot. Each has a varying degree of difficulty with the flop shot being the most challenging. If you have not tried to improve your skill regarding these three shots, it might be time to focus some practice time in this area.

One of the challenges is understanding the nomenclature of each shot. Each of these shots reacts differently with respect to ball flight and release of the ball once it lands. One a side note, each shot still requires us to select a landing spot to successfully execute it. This is a key fundamental requirement for all short game shots. Back to today’s focus….short game shots. Here is a great infographic explaining the difference of the three possible short game shot selections.

As you can see, each shot offers a different ball flight and release distance. To accomplish these shots, you can use a different club with the same basic swing or the same club with a slight change to each backswing. Either is an acceptable approach to hitting the ball from around the green. To help with today’s discussion, here is a good video that explains how to hit each shot with the same club.

Regardless of the approach you undertake, practice will help improve your skill around the green. One of the challenges you will face is selecting which shot for which situation. This aspect of our up and down game comes with practice and increasing confidence. Personally, I lean towards a chip shot whenever possible because it suits my short game best. Overall, which ever shot you select, commit to it and evaluate the results after.

Mastering the three short shots (chip, pitch and flop) are a must. As you improve your ability to execute these shots, you will increase your confidence, ball contact and lower your golf score. All are a great combination to some fun and exciting golf.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
