It is time to clear up a misconception about two golf tournament formats that often confuse many amateurs. Many people confuse โbest ballโ and โscrambleโ formats because it is not really intuitive. So today, I want to explain what a scramble tournament format is about because I will be playing in Menโs night tonight using this exact format. On a side note, most charity tournaments use the scramble format because it is easy and fun for many non / beginner golfers. I enjoy a scramble tournament because it offers a fun way to interact with your playing partners.
Before offering some strategy advice about playing in a scramble tournament, here is how it is played:
Personally, the strategy I like to use was developed over playing in many, many scramble tournaments is simple and fun for all players. First, I like to have the shorter hitters go first and hope they get a ball in play. As we work through the team, each player tries to hit the ball a bit farther and in play. My job as the last hitter is to ensure we are in play regardless of the distance.
Second, I like to keep the same order all the time because it allows each player to learn from the person who plays in front of them. This one is a more a personal preference, but it works especially when putting. Keeping the same order just offers a bit of structure; again it works for my game.
Lastly, we never worry about each shot. Some will be awesome, others not so much. I use the attitude that each player is trying their best. So, I never worry about missed shots. The only rule/guideline I like to reinforce is for the first putter to hit the ball with enough force to get their ball past the hole. This one stroke allows the other players a chance to see the break on a putt and improve the chances of sinking their shot.
Playing in a scramble is fun. This format is easy to follow and offers a chance for every team member to hit the hero shot. Regardless of how you approach playing in a scramble, ensure you have fun and enjoy the time with your friends.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
