Playing Golf The Hard Way

By admin May11,2024

With all the videos and articles out there telling you the easiest way to play golf, I thought it would be fun to talk about reality. The reality is that golf can be easy, but for most players it is difficult and a challenge. I went through the entire gambit of these emotions yesterday while playing golf at my home course. I am slowly knocking the rust off my game and I understand the process of improvement each year, but I feel that to improve my game the most, I need to focus on what I do best and improve on the other areas throughout the season. Well, yesterday’s round sure showed where I need the most improvement!

The stats for yesterday’s round went like this: 6 GIRS, 6 Up and Downs, 12 pars, and 6 bogeys. With par being 74, I shot an acceptable 80 (but I am not overly excited about it. There are two glaring stats on the good and bad side of my round.

The first is 6 greens in regulation (GIR). This number is way too low. 33% is unacceptable. I expect to be around 50% more often than not with the odd round with a higher percentage. The worse aspect of missing the green is how poorly I missed. I was off the green, usually short, by as much as 15 yards. That is ridiculous! What this stat indicates is my iron play into greens is very poor and I will need to focus on this particular shot more to improve my overall game.

The one stat I was happy with was my 50% up and down game. I was chipping very well and left many shots with 4 feet for par. I sank a high percentage of these allowing my stat to be acceptable. I used a varied of wedges and my 7 iron. Overall, I was very happy with my short game and hope to improve on that as the season progresses.

It has taken a great deal of time to understand what the stats mean and where I need to focus my game. For now, I am on the right path and look forward to avoiding playing golf the hard way.

For most players, golf is not an easy game. It requires a great deal of time, focused practice, and desire to improve. The easiest way I know to improve our game quickly is to talk to our local teaching professional and take lessons. If you are not inclined, then prepare yourself to grind out successes from time to time. By the way, this second choice is golfing the hard way.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
