Tell something about you that most people don’t know.
That’s a hard question. I’d say most people would say I’m too serious, not so nice. I have a golf game face when I’m on the course. But when you get to know me, you’ll find a kind heart.
Westlake senior Julia Sosa is looking forward to a family atmosphere when she joins the team at Sam Houston State in the fall. She claims she can beat her brother, UT golfer Jacob Sosa, in a putting contest.
Are you superstitious?
If I start a round wearing a jacket, I’ll leave it on. And when I’m set to tee off, if the arrow on the ball is pointing left or right, it messes with my head. I also like to wear my hair in a bun. I usually have a good day when it’s in a bun.
What has been your favorite vacation?
It’s when the family went to Saint Simons Island (in Georgia) to watch my brother, Jacob, play in a golf tournament for UT. It was fun to see the team dynamic while watching them play against other collegiate teams.
What do you consider to be the world’s greatest invention?
The AC. Living in Texas, the first thing I want to do after a round of golf in the summer is get into the AC.

Golf is a family affair in the Sosa household
Why is golf such a big part of your family?
My dad started to play when he was little because his dad made him play. He developed a love for golf that he has shared with Jacob and me. It got me excited to play, too. It brings out my competitive side.
Julia Sosa of the Westlake golf team will continue her education and play golf at Sam Houston State. Her brother, Jacob, plays for the University of Texas. She maintains that she’s a better putter than he is.
What have you learned from Jacob, who golfs for the Longhorns?
I’ve learned that patience is key when it comes to golf and hard work is everything. You can be naturally good, but you still have to put the work in. There are right ways to work if you’re going to be successful.
Do you and Jacob have a sibling rivalry?
I’m a really good putter and I can beat him in a putting competition.
What will Jacob say when he hear you said this?
He’d probably laugh, but he’d also say I’m right.
Has golf taught you any life lessons?
Always take things one shot at a time. You can’t control what has happened in the past. I had a part-time job at Rudy’s and one of the managers told me to look at the person in front of you instead of looking at the back of a long line.
I hear you have exciting college news.
Yes, I’m beyond excited about playing next year at Sam Houston State. I want to be part of a college golf family and grow as a golfer.
Dream dinner: Sharing golf stories with uncle Jesse
If you could have dinner with any four people in the history of the world, who would they be?
Oh gosh, I’d say Scottie Scheffler, my (late) uncle Jesse, Jesus and my (late) grandma.
Tell me about Uncle Jesse.
I’ve just heard so many stories about him. He passed away when he was about 18. He used to play golf with my dad. I wish I had gotten to know him.
