Titleist’s Vokey Design wedges have been the most popular model on the PGA Tour since 2004, and Titleist say that they accounted for over half of all wedges in play on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour last season.

The new SM10 wedges are said to produce a lower, more controlled flight with improved feel and maximum spin, and the likes of Jordan Spieth, Ludvig Aberg and Max Homa have already made the switch to the latest model this season.

In producing the new SM10, Titleist have taken inspiration from Master Craftsman Bob Vokey’s three keys to great play:

Shot versatility

The SM10 wedge comes with the choice of six different sole grinds (F, S, M, K, T and D) to produce a total of 25 unique loft, bounce and grind combinations.

The idea behind this is that it allows every golfer the chance to find the wedge setup that is best for their game, providing them with the opportunity of creativity around the greens along with proper turf interaction.

Precise distance and trajectory control

The wedges feature new progressive CG placement as you move through the lofts. This results in a lower, more controlled trajectory, a more solid feel, and tighter dispersion from the lowest to the highest lofted wedges.

In the stronger lofted wedges, the CG is lower to provide an easier transition from the irons set and give more consistent gapping as you move through the set. Based on tour feedback, the CG is also pushed closer to the centre of the face to help eliminate excessive draw shaping and provide a better feel.

In the higher lofts, the CG is moved both up and forward, providing a lower trajectory and a squarer face at impact.

Maximum spin

Vokey have refined their ‘Spin Milled’ process to deliver higher, more consistent spin rates. Each of the TX9 grooves is individually cut depending on the loft and finish, and then treated with high frequency heat to make the face more durable.

The grooves on the stronger-lofted wedges (46-54°) are cut narrower and deeper, while the higher-lofted wedges (56-62°) have wider and shallower grooves.

The wedges also feature progressive shaping, with the 46-52° heads having a smaller profile and straighter leading edge, while the 56-62° lofts have a larger footprint and more rounded leading edge for shot versatility.
