GEORGETOWN — Winning the state golf tournament was the primary goal. Beating Westlake would make it sweeter.
Lake Travis accomplished both as the Cavaliers captured the Class 6A UIL boys state championship on Tuesday, beating The Woodlands by six strokes on a muggy afternoon at White Wing Golf Club.

In the process, Lake Travis ended Westlake’s six-year reign as Class 6A champs. Last year the Cavaliers finished as state runners-up to the Chaps, five strokes back.
“We got tired of winning silver medals,” Lake Travis coach Dustin Payne said. “We finally got over the hump.”
Westlake beat Lake Travis in district, regionals and state in 2023. The Chaps then beat the Cavaliers in district and regionals this year before falling off the pace at state. Westlake finished in eighth place in the team standings, 20 shots behind the new state champs.
“After we lost last year, I gathered everyone in my (world history) classroom,” Payne said. “I told them we had a state champion in the room.”
Lake Travis would finish the tournament with a two-day total score of 570, six shots ahead of The Woodlands, though The Woodlands sophomore Cooper Paull earned individual honors, carding a two-day total of 138 (72-66), two shots ahead of Dallas Jesuit’s Reese Roberts and Highland Park’s Brooks Simmons.
Lake Travis earned its fifth boys state championship, its first since 2013.

Cavs: This year’s finish was ‘100% better’ than 2023
Ethan Dufresne led the Cavaliers with a two-day total of 141 (72-69). Luke Nolan (70-74-144), Mackey Beckett (71-73-144) and Bennett Kuhns (66-78-144) finished with identical scores. Elijah Galvan (73-75-148) rounded out the scoring.
Dufresne said the victory was “100% better” because the Cavaliers ended Westlake’s streak. He said his team’s ability to avoid big mistakes weighed into the victory. He said he used a driver just three times in two days. Galvan, a senior who’s heading to St. Mary’s next year, said Lake Travis was motivated after losing to Westlake in 2023. “It was something we talked about all year,” he said.
Vandegrift’s Jaxon Bandelier has top-five finish
Among the day’s top golfers was Vandegrift junior Jaxon Bandelier, who shot a 2-under 70 to complement the 71 he fired on Monday. He finished in a tie for fourth place, three shots behind Paull.
It was a tale of two courses for the Oklahoma State-bound Bandelier, who was 5-under through the first nine holes and 3-over in the back nine. Bogeys on 17 and 18 knocked him off the lead, but he was not discouraged by the way he played.
“My dad tells me I’m one of the best golfers in the state and I think I proved that today,” said Bandelier, who represented the Vipers as an individual.
Westlake sophomore Sterling Hurd shot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday to lead the Chaparrals.
The shot of the tournament came from Katy Jordan’s Cole Pregler, who hit a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th on Monday.
Another title for Wimberley golfer
State title No. 3: Wimberley’s Jaxon Donaldson won the Class 4A golf championship in Kingsland, beating runner-up Zach Kehoe of Bridgeport by eight shots on Tuesday. Donaldson, who will golf next year at Texas State, finished with a two-day total of 8-under par. He also won state as a freshman and as a junior.
