Xander Schauffele had himself a day at the first round of the PGA Championship on Thursday.
Schauffele, the No. 3-ranked golfer in the world, shot a 62 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, tying the record for best single-round score ever at a major tournament. He also became the first player to shoot a single-round 62 twice in a major event, as he also did so at the U.S. Open in 2023.

The 30-year-old golfer stands alone atop the PGA Championship leaderboard through the first 18 holes, sitting at 9-under par after his bogey-free round. With his Thursday performance, Schauffele shot up to first in odds to win the PGA Championship, as he looks for his first major victory of his career.
“Up there, I’d say,” Schauffele told ESPN’s Marty Smith on where his round ranks all time. “Again, it’s just one day. I’m very happy with how I played, very content with the shots I rolled. Can’t really think much more of it. I’ve gotta go tee up again tomorrow.”

What did Xander Schauffele shoot today?
Schauffele shot a 9-under 62 during Thursday’s opening round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Course. Schauffele’s round firmly placed him at first in the standings after the first 18 holes in Louisville.
Valhalla course record
Schauffele set the course record at Valhalla Golf Club on Thursday after shooting a 62, one stroke better than the previous record set by Jose Maria Olazabal’s 63 in 2000. Schauffele’s performance also topped the best first round at Valhalla Golf Club ever, as the previous first-round best was a 65 by Ryan Palmer, Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell, all in 2014.
It wasn’t the only record Schauffele set on Thursday.
PGA Championship single-round record
Schauffele also broke the single-round record in PGA Championship history with his score of 62 on Thursday. The previous best mark was 63, which was shot by 18 different golfers.
Major championship single-round record
Only three golfers have ever shot a 62 at a major tournament, and Xander Schauffele has done it twice.
Schauffele’s 62 on Thursday marked the fourth time the score has been achieved at a major tournament, with Brendan Grace (2017 British Open), Rickie Fowler (2023 U.S. Open) and Schauffele (2023 U.S. Open, 2024 PGA Championship), all tied for the best round at a major.
